Monthly magazine for immigrant women

With the installation Monthly magazine for immigrant women, Saddie Choua updates the Fenomenale Feminateek ("Phenomenal Library of Women") by Belgian author Louis Paul Boon. Following Boon's example, Choua has been collecting and categorizing nude photos of men for some time now. Consciously or unconsciously, Boon played with a slumbering exoticism by categorizing his women's photos as ‘the islander’, ‘the gypsy girl’, ‘the black-skinned’ or ‘the color-mixed woman'. Even though Boon's writing teems with irony and humor, he still affirms a stereotypical view of women and race. In Monthly magazine for immigrant women, men are put on display through a pseudo-anthropological gaze similar to that of Boon.
